Our new Director for Guiding Star Child Development Center has been chosen, and joined our ranks on April 24th, 2017! Ms. Melissa Valladares is very excited to be joining Guiding Star as the new director! She has a long history of working in the early childhood field. Ms.Melissa began as a teacher in 2003, and has continued to grow in her career. She received her Bachelors in Sociology from the University of Maryland and her Masters in Management, Public Relations and Marketing from the University of Maryland. Ms. Melissa also obtained continuing education certifications including 90-hour Preschool certification, 45-hour Infant and Toddler certification, School Age certification, and Administration certification. She recently completed her educational trainer coursework and working towards becoming a state of Maryland approved education trainer. She uses her knowledge from working in the classroom to guide her programming. She thrives in working directly with teachers to create a nurturing environment for all the children and incorporate innovative ideas to grow the school. She carries passion in every task she completes and always works to keep the programming new and exciting. Preschool is the most important time in a young child’s life, and it is important to create the strongest foundation for a love of learning during this time. Learning through play is the most natural way for children to learn and Ms. Melissa believes in using this method in all the classrooms. She enjoys working directly with families to meet the needs of all the children and building a community foundation for the school. Ms. Melissa extends her outreach into the community to give back and create partnerships. She looks forward to a promising future with Guiding Star and always maintains an open door policy.

Sonia Feldman

Sonia Feldman has her Masters in Early Childhood Education and over eight years experience in the field. She also has her director, preschool and infant and toddler certifications. 

Ms. Sonia believes in educating children through play. She values diversity, nurture, and kindness in the classrooms. She models respect and having a open mind. Ms. Sonia wants everyone to feel included: children, teachers and families. She knows that teamwork and open communication makes for an enriched preschool experience. Ms. Sonia believes in incorporating academics through play to prepare children in all different learning domains for the future. 

Ms. Sonia hopes to bring her experience and love for children to Guiding Star. She plans to be a part of leading the way for a successful experience for each child and family.
